God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
Psalm 46:1-6
Notes
This Psalm is filled with symbolism and figurative speech. The mountains represent the Assyrians or world leaders. The sea is the haughty rage of the leaders, and the swelling is the pride of those leaders because of their interference in the existing order of things. God is the mighty contrast of such chaos, as you will see. God dwells in the holiest of places, the great city, the holy habitation – heaven. Yet, He also lives in us who believe in the gospel (death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus), and He can never be taken away from those who truly believe.
Is this not where it seems we are in the world today? The chaos surrounding wars, the rumors of wars, the pride of world leaders leading their countries to destruction and to benefit themselves. They grow their own notoriety and pocketbooks with the monies of their constituency. Wealth is collected as they sit in their lofty positions.
But God …. with His utterances and voice, He brings us out of this mayhem and into the morning dawn, a resting place. He takes us out of darkness and into His marvelous light. He dissolves fear through His judgments, which greatly contrasts with the nations’ roaring and rage. Only He can calm the raging of the nations and move kingdoms to either destruction or strength.
With God, we need not fear the things of this world. We need to trust God, run to Him, and know He judges all men and controls everything. If you do not know God as your savior, do not wait. There is no time like the present to receive His comfort, His bright morning dawn, and experience His presence in your life.
Who do you go to in times of trouble? None can give us the strength and the comfort that God can. His is a divine comforter. Contentment does not come from the provisions of the world but through faith, humility, and a relationship with the Almighty, Most High God, who has control of all things. Receive Him, run to Him, lean on Him, and trust Him with the stresses of our lives and the affairs of the world.
