For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12
Notes
In Hebrews 4:12-13, we receive a warning that unbelief will not go undetected. The term ‘word of God’ is to be understood in the sense of the written scriptures, not in ‘The Word’—the physical manifestation of God’s word in Jesus Christ. This word of God is many things:
LIVING
The word of God is constantly active and alive. When we read scripture we find ourselves led or drawn to different areas of the Bible. Our studies show us different sides of God’s word. The living word is as active and alive today as the days they were written.
POWERFUL
The word of God is dynamic and formidable. Reading scripture can encourage, embolden, comfort, convict and bring joy. It can lift the weak from the depths and bring the mighty down.
PERCEPTIVE
The word of God is likened to a double-edged sword. It can expose both the positive and negative of our lives. Scripture reveals our faults and failings, and yet, it also can embolden and encourage us. It uncovers what is bringing us down and highlights our gifts and purpose.
DIVIDING
The word of God divides what seems to be visually indivisible. It pierces the soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is sharp enough to delicately separate our thoughts and our motives.
DISCERNING
The word of God discerns the thoughts and intent of the heart. It challenges us in our transgressions and affirms our endeavors to be followers of Christ. Life is not a medley of happenings fate decided to shower upon us. Our choices, the ones we make with our hearts, souls and minds determine the trajectory and fulfillment of our lives. The word of God exposes our true nature and will.
Suddenly, there is a shift from references to the word of God to God himself. Before God and in His sight, we must give an account of our lives. Nothing is hidden and everything is revealed. All our thoughts, intentions, motives, decisions and devotions are seen by the eyes of whom nothing can be hidden. He is constantly aware of all that happens in the entire universe. Beyond what can be seen, he knows where there is real faith and when there is only a show of show with little substance.
