Memorizing scripture causes transformative thinking, it reveals God’s will and memorization helps us to keep His commandments and scripture near providing strength and encouragement to us in our faith.
As Colossians 3:16 tells us to “let the word of Christ dwell in us richly,” and in this way, we can be nurtured and grow. For the more we can remember verses of the bible and better understand their meanings, the better we can understand our purpose.
Another reason for consistent practice in memorization include challenging and training the brain to remember. Findings show regular memorization improves the functions of memory-related structures of the brain.
1. Start small
Choose a short verse to start with… and make it even shorter by breaking it down into pieces.
2. Say it out loud
Speaking the words aloud is an excellent way to engrain scripture into your memory. This will also allow you to get used to the sound of words and phrases.
3. Incorporate the verse into your prayers
When you pray, include elements of the verse or even a line or phrase.
4. Repeat, repeat, repeat
The goal isn’t to reduce it to a mindless, repeated activity, but to slowly press the verse into your memory through repetition. There’s no prize for memorizing a Bible verse fastest; the point is to internalize it over time.
5. Translate the verse into a different language
This tip isn’t for everyone, obviously, but if you’re comfortable in more than one language, try translating your verse into a different language. Translation requires an intense focus on the meaning and language of a verse—a significant help for memorization.
